Greenland – glaciers & ice

Up close and personal with glaciers and their offspring.

[part of a series of posts beginning here]

It’s hard to imagine the size of Greenland, or its ice cap.  Even those glaciers that flow down to the sea, like the Thryms glacier below, are truly massive.   (Notice our ship, the National Geographic Endurance, at lower left!) Read on for more about our outings among the ice, including video…

First river outing

Time to get out on the river!

With the warm weather this weekend, it’s finally time to get back onto the river. I pulled out the kayak and headed downriver to the mouth of Hewes Brook. On a tiny island, inches above the level of the river, I found a Canada Goose guarding her nest.

Shortly downriver, another goose hesitated until I was near, then launched out of the water and into the air.

On that island, a bit bigger, is a beaver lodge dating back several years.

Is it still occupied? I’ll check again another day.

Los Cabos

A week in Mexico to attend MobiCom, and to snorkel the warm waters around Los Cabos.

I spent a week in Los Cabos, Mexico, to attend the annual MobiCom conference.  Although the conference itself was excellent – great science, interesting colleagues, and celebrations of this conference’s 25th anniversary – I had a chance to explore some of the outdoor opportunities in the area.  Read on, and check out the photo gallery.2019-10-24-75256.jpg Continue reading “Los Cabos”
