Strawberry season!

My favorite!

Once again it is strawberry season. I spent an hour or two of Saturday morning picking fresh, ripe strawberries at Edgewater Farm in Plainfield – while a bald eagle flew to and from its nest high in a pine tree between the field and the Connecticut River. According to friends who shared these strawberries for dessert on Sunday, they were some of the tastiest strawberries ever!

Strawberry season

A favorite time of year!

Every spring I look forward to strawberry season. Around here, that means late June (or, back in the day, the first week of July). The days get long, the weather gets hot, and the strawberries become red and juicy. I go early in the morning, when it’s still cool, and pick a whole tray. At home, the ripest, juiciest berries become an instant snack while I wash, trim, slice, and freeze the rest. They become part of my breakfast parfait for months to come!

Strawberries!

One of my favorite things…

It’s that glorious time of year when the strawberry fields fill with luscious red berries. I enjoy picking a whole flat (eight quarts)… one or two to eat immediately, and the rest to freeze and enjoy the rest of the year. As it happens, this morning I finished off my supply frozen last summer – just in time to pick a new batch today.

Pam and I managed to pick two flats this year, all at their peak of ripeness. Yum!

Strawberry season!

A favorite summer ritual.

I love strawberries, and I especially love strawberry season. I have long enjoyed the opportunity to visit pick-your-own strawberry fields, fill many quart boxes, and then return home to eat some now, and freeze most for eating later. Indeed, I’ve just about finished my frozen bags of 2021 berries, so I was eager to get out there today before the season ends (likely next week, if not sooner).

Today I picked eight heaping quarts of the ripest, juiciest berries I’ve seen in a long time, at Edgewater Farms in Plainfield NH. The sun was warm, the breeze pleasant, the berries plentiful, and I could hear the buzz of many happy families nearby in the field. I spent about an hour picking, and (back home) another hour washing, sorting, trimming, cutting, and freezing most of them. You caught me red-handed!

After dinner I enjoyed the ultimate treat… vanilla ice cream with strawberries!
