Grindelwald – Männlichen

An afternoon jaunt to a promontory overlooking Grindelwald.

Our fourth day in Grindelwald allowed for a second hike. (In the morning, most of us took the train up to Jungfraujoch, where three of us walked through the sunshine across the snowfields to a hut for tea and cakes.) On return to Kleine Scheidegg, we met up with others in our group for lunch at a cheerful little berghaus nearby. We then struck out along the ridgeline, with the Eiger’s north face dominating the landscape behind us. Read on!

The Eiger’s north face looms over the pleasant meadows and shops around Kleine Scheidegg.

The trail follows a meandering path through green meadows, through cow pastures, past the top of the “Männlichen” gondola, and then climbs to a narrow promontory. It really is as sharp as it looks!

We reach the gondola at Männlichen, just below its promontory outlook.

At that promontory, known as Männlichen, the trail ends abruptly with a sheer drop to the valley below. From here one can look left up the Lauterbrunnen valley, ahead toward Interlochen, or right and down into Grindelwald. Across the valley is the Faulhorn ridge, which we had traversed yesterday (but is now in the clouds; hah! we nailed the weather right).

Below, you can see Männlichen from the Faulhorn ridge, the day before.

Yesterday’s view from the opposite side, near Schynige Platte, of the area where we hiked today.
