Lyme wildlife: June 2024

New surprises!

My wildlife cameras have been busy this month! With the return of spring, I placed a camera back down by the riverside… and started capturing the daily visits of a couple of Canada Geese and their brood of little goslings. As the weeks wore by, the goslings grew bigger… and fewer. (We started with four, then three, then two.) They were fun to watch, but the really cool stuff came later. Read on!

Over on the other side of the hill, two cameras kept an eye on the black bears. Whereas last month treated me to a curious mama bear and her two cubs, this month saw another mama bear with two different (smaller) cubs, and a curious papa bear. Gosh, these bears love to fiddle with my cameras! One of them actually managed to get the camera case open – but fortunately closed it again, before the rains came.

Check out the video, which includes some rather scary close-up views of the bear, his claws, and even inside his mouth!

But the really exciting stuff happened on the last day of June, when I retrieved a camera next to the vernal pool. I had originally placed it there to find out who was messing with my timelapse camera (the culprit was a bear), and this week it enjoyed a daily view of a family of coyote pups! I counted as many as seven coyotes (mama and six pups?) in one video.

Earlier in the month, that same camera captured a wide variety of critters; deer, hawk, owl, raccoon, porcupine, and more. See the video!

Coming soon… a family of groundhog pups. Super cute!
